Neuro Vision OV5640 Regulatory Compliance

Compliance provisions and status for the Neuro Vision OV5640 and OV5640-W modules. The -W variant contains the MAYA-W476 wireless module.

intermediate2 min read

The Neuro Vision OV5640 contains no intentional radio transmitter. The Neuro Vision OV5640-W adds a u-blox MAYA-W476 WiFi and Bluetooth LE module, which is the subject of the radio provisions on this page. The time of flight sensor's laser classification is recorded below and applies to both variants.

The MAYA-W476 carries its own modular radio approvals from u-blox. Integration into the carrier follows u-blox's integration guidance regarding antenna keep-out and ground reference.

Band restriction

The WiFi driver in the Arduino core is compiled with 5 GHz support disabled (CONFIG_5GHz_SUPPORT=0). Every 5 GHz channel, sub-band, 802.11ac configuration and 5 GHz transmit power table is compiled out, about 169 guarded code sites in the driver. In consequence:

  • The access point is forced to a 2.4 GHz channel.
  • Station mode scans and joins 2.4 GHz networks only.
  • The 5 GHz regulatory regime, EN 301 893 in Europe and FCC Part 15.407 in the United States, together with dynamic frequency selection, is out of scope.

802.11ax on 2.4 GHz remains enabled.

Radio test mode

For EMC and radio testing the core provides Tools > RF test mode. When enabled it compiles the NXP manufacturing test path (CONFIG_RF_TEST_MODE) together with a wrapper layer that hardwires the band to 2.4 GHz and clamps channels to 1 to 13. The RfTestLab bench sketch uses it under test reference OHM-EMC-N6-WC-001. The option defaults to Disabled, in which state production firmware contains no means to key the radio outside normal operation. It must remain disabled in any firmware that leaves the bench.

Laser safety

The VL53L1CB time of flight sensor contains a 940 nm vertical cavity surface emitting laser. STMicroelectronics classifies the VL53L1CB as a Class 1 laser device under IEC 60825-1:2014 when operated as specified. The bundled library operates it within its specified configuration.

Status

EMC and radio assessment of the carriers with the Neuro N6 is in progress under OHM-EMC-N6-WC-001. CE and UKCA marking follows completion. The declaration of conformity, when issued, will be linked from Downloads.

Operating conditions

The modules are 3.3 V logic and are powered from the Neuro N6. The strobe LED on the sensor strobe output is a low power indicator class LED. Other provisions of the Neuro N6 compliance page apply.
